Everything You Need to Know About Teeth Whitening

teeth-whiteningMany of our patients are interested in teeth whitening because it is the fastest way to make an impact in how your smile appears.  A bright white smile looks healthy and youthful.  Additionally, studies conducted by Oral-B found that people white a beautiful smile were considered to be 20 percent more attractive than the general population.  This makes getting this simple cosmetic dentistry procedure a win-win.Here are some answers to commonly asked questions:
  • How white will my teeth get?  That depends on what you are doing to whiten them.  If you are using an over-the-counter solution like whitening strips or trays, your teeth will typically become around two shades whiter.  If you use a whitening toothpaste, your teeth will become brighter but not necessarily white.  The most effective way to whiten teeth is to have it done at the dentist.  An in-office treatment or using a professional solution and trays at home will whiten teeth by up to eight shades.
  • Can I control how white they get?  If you are looking to ease into a white smile, the best way to do so is with a take home teeth whitening solution. We can create customized trays that are used at home, and you can stop the treatment as soon as you reach your desired shade of white.  If they need to be treated again, you can repeat this at home as often as you need to.
  • How does the solution work?  Most whitening solutions contain some form of peroxide.  When it is applied to the teeth, it penetrates the enamel and starts the oxidation process.  The molecules inside of the teeth are made to reflect less light.  As this happens, the molecules become colorless, and the teeth appear whiter.
  • Will my teeth become sensitive?  If your teeth are whitened by a dentist, they should not be sensitive afterwards because the solution will be given in the right consistency, and any whitening trays will be customized for your teeth.  If, however, you purchase over-the-counter trays or solutions you may experience sensitive gums or teeth because the solution could leak out, or the consistency could be too harsh.
  • How often will I need to repeat the procedure?  It really depends on what you eat and drink.  Some people only need to whiten their teeth once a year where coffee and red wine drinkers may need to do so every three to six months.  If you eat and drink things that can stain your teeth, you will need to whiten them more often.
  • Are there any risks?  If your teeth whitening procedure is completed by the dentist, there will be no risk to your health or teeth.  The problem is that many people have this done at a local tanning salon or another business that offers a version of this treatment.  These businesses are typically not run by medical professionals, so there is an inherent risk to having your teeth whitened there.
