Oral Hygiene Basics You Need to Know

Learning what it takes to have good oral hygiene is necessary if you want to have good overall health. It does not take a lot of time for you to use the basics of oral hygiene, which helps to ensure that your teeth are clean. When your teeth are clean you are much less likely to experience any negative oral issues, like cavities, gum disease and sensitive teeth. When you provide your mouth with the oral hygiene basics it needs to keep bacteria at bay, you are doing what is necessary to ensure your good oral health as well as your good overall general health.

According to the American Dental Association, home oral care is an important contributor to oral health and can help lessen the need for extensive dental intervention in the future. The following is a list of oral hygiene basics that everyone needs to know in order to provide their mouth with the proper oral care.

The basics of brushing teeth

Everybody should brush their teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a quality fluoridated toothpaste for at least two minutes each time. When brushing teeth small circular motions should be used gently along the gum line while holding the toothbrush at a slight angle. Using an electric toothbrush is recommended for those who are living with health conditions that make it difficult to use a manual toothbrush. Let the toothbrush air dry after using and be sure to replace every three to four months.

The basics of flossing teeth

Everybody should floss their teeth at least once a day using a piece of waxed floss, a dental pick, an interdental flosser or a water flosser. It is simply a matter of preference when it comes to one's choice of floss. Flossing requires one to gently floss in between the teeth in order to remove any hidden food particles. Flossing needs to be done one tooth at a time. If someone wants to floss more than once a day, that is completely fine. It does not matter whether someone flosses their teeth first or brushes their teeth first, as long as the mouth is thoroughly cleaned.

Keeping bacteria at bay

Using a quality mouthwash can help get rid of any bacteria that brushing and flossing may have missed. Because there are many different types of mouthwash to choose from nowadays, asking a dental professional for their advice is recommended.
